Isuzu

The Isuzu Motors Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturer of commercial automobiles and diesel engines based in Tokyo, Japan. Isuzu Motors’ main activity is the production, sale, and marketing of Isuzu commercial vehicles and diesel engines. The specialized components of the company depend more on the situation than on the choice. In recent years, Isuzu has seen difficult days; the lack of funding for new product investments and marketing has forced the company to rely on a partnership with GM. Both models in its line are derived from existing GM products.

In the post-war years, Isuzu truck production grew rapidly. The company’s vehicles played an important role in the reconstruction of Japan and were used to transport clothing, food, and other necessities. The company formed a joint venture with Subaru in 1987, which produced the Isuzu Rodeo and Isuzu Pickup cars. The company’s sales were relatively strong in the 1990s, partly due to Trooper’s growing success, and by that time its size and luxury had grown. The Trooper was one of the models responsible for the popularity of the SUV car category in those decades.

In 1999, GM increased its stake in Isuzu to take on a majority stake. However, the new millennium brought bad news. Previous bestsellers like Rodeo and Trooper stood out with new, fresh competition, and sales plummeted. In the crossover SUV, the Rodeo and Axiom were derailed in 2004. Currently, the Isuzu line consists of only two cars, a truck and an SUV, both of which are based on GM products.
